Keep Alive the Birch of Bend

The Evil Queen “Birchy” and one of her bronze birch borer beetles..

A blight has infected the Birch trees of Bend. OSU Master Gardeners believe that if the trees are not located, protected and dead trees removed, that within three to five years there will be no live Birch trees in Bend.

4-H Tech Wizards are attempting to map every Birch tree in Bend. After locating the trees, they will analyze the data and come up with a plan for protection and removal.

What you can do:

1. Self report your birch trees. Email sarah.cofer@oregonstate.edu or call 541 548-6088 and let us know the following about your trees.

Location: Street Address including zip code (or longitude/latitude)
Size: Small (under 10 ft) Medium (10 -20 ft) or Large(over 20ft)
Condition: Unknown, Dead, some die back
Area :(front, back or side yard)

2. Join us over spring break to walk the town and locate trees.
No experience necessary.
